Ever had to leave because of the smell?

FRAGRANCE FRIDAYS • NO. 02

SEPT 2026 • FROM THE STUDIO
That happened to me this weekend. I took a little girls’ getaway to Seattle with my mom over the long weekend. Our only real plans were shopping and eating good food.
We found out Sézane had recently opened in U-Village, so obviously we had to go. IYKYK. But we also stopped in a couple of stores where the fragrance in the air was so strong that after about 60 seconds, I genuinely had to leave.
Abercrombie & Fitch circa 2005, anyone?
Which made me think our first fragrance fact had to be about this: A “strong” fragrance and a long-lasting fragrance are not the same thing. When I say strong here, I mean how far and intensely a fragrance travels from you. In perfume terms, that’s called projection.
Projection = how far your fragrance travels.
Longevity = how long it stays on your skin.
A fragrance can project a lot and fade quickly, or stay close to the skin (subtle) and still be there hours later. It completely depends on the formula and the materials used.
At the risk of getting too dense too quick, I won't go into it here, but if you want me to get more "nerdy" in future blogs, just reply and let me know!
Anyway, that distinction is actually a big part of what we mean at Boathouse when we say made to enhance, not overwhelm.
I want you to notice your fragrance. I want the people close to you to notice it. I just don’t necessarily prefer the whole room smell you coming.
How about you? What do you prefer?
