So… What Exactly Is “Clean” Perfume?

By Lydia, still recovering, still thinking too hard about fragrance.
Let’s talk about the word that sends the entire beauty industry into a spiral:
clean.
If you’ve ever stood in Sephora reading ingredient lists like you’re studying for the bar exam…
If you’ve ever wondered whether your perfume is secretly plotting against your hormones…
If you’ve ever Googled “is fragrance toxic” at 1AM (hi, hello, it’s me)…
Then welcome. You’re in the right place.
Because here’s the thing:
Most of what’s said online about perfume being “toxic” is… not totally accurate.
And also not totally wrong.
It’s just… missing context.
So let’s break this down like normal humans, not fear-based robots.
First: a truth bomb.
“Clean” is not a regulated term.
It means everything.
And absolutely nothing.
It’s like someone saying, “I’m eating healthy now,” and then you watch them inhale three Quest bars and a kombucha. (No shade)
Everyone has their own version of “clean.”
So here’s ours... the Boathouse version... rooted in science and common sense and kindness for your nervous system:
1. Clean does NOT mean “all-natural.”
This shocks people every time. To be honest...
it shocked me when I first started!
Some of the world’s most irritating fragrance allergens? Natural.
Same family as the tear-streaming compounds released when you chop an onion.
Meanwhile, some of the gentlest fragrance ingredients ever created? Lab-made.
Zero irritants.
Ultra stable.
Consistently safe.
Nature is beautiful…
But she also invented poison ivy.
So at Boathouse, “clean” means:
We choose the ingredients with the BEST safety profile — natural or synthetic — not the ones with the trendiest aesthetic.
2. Clean means: “Nothing known to be harmful.”
Period.
This is where your brain can take a deep breath.
Our perfumes are made without:
Parabens
Phthalates
Added preservatives
Endocrine disruptors
Anything on IFRA’s restricted list
Anything the EU flags as high-concern for fragrance use
Not because fear told us to do it…But because data told us to.
If it’s questionable, we just don’t use it.
Simple.
3. Clean also means clarity. (A.K.A. no secrets.)
Most brands hide allergens.
Or bury them.
Or pretend they don’t exist. (hello 100% natural perfumes...)
We list every potential allergen down to the 0.0001%
not to scare you, but to empower you.
You deserve to know what you’re putting on your skin.
End of story.
(Also, if you ever want the full IFRA documentation or EU allergen sheets, you can literally just email me. I will happily send them. I have them all organized like a very scented little nerd.)
4. Clean means respecting the nervous system.
This one matters more than people realize.
You know how:
too-bright light
too-loud noise
too-spicy food
…can make your whole body go “absolutely not”?
Strong scent can do the same thing.
It’s not toxicity... it’s overstimulation.
So instead of making “punch-you-in-the-face” perfume, we make Sensory-Kind™ perfume:
balanced projection
no cloying heaviness
no dizzy, overwhelming cloud
options for sensitive wearers (hi, perfume oils!)
Perfume shouldn’t overpower you... It should simply enhance you.
5. Clean means: fragrance that feels GOOD to wear.
Not stressful.
Not confusing.
Not “I hope this doesn’t give me a headache today.”
Just delightful.
Reliable.
Beautiful on skin.
Beautiful on the planet.
Beautiful to live in.
That’s it.
That’s the entire mission.
In short:
Clean perfume for us = safety + transparency + sensory-respect.
Not fear. Not extremes. Not shame. Not guessing.
Just perfume that treats your senses kindly.
And honestly?
That’s all I ever wanted when I started at Boathouse; perfume that made me feel good on the inside too.
If you ever have questions about ingredients, allergens, or how we formulate, my inbox is always open....
probably with a cup of coffee nearby and a stack of notes scribbled with "great ideas" on my desk.
